On November 5, 2024, our community approved a $54 million capital referendum for the Unified School District of Antigo. These funds will be used to build a brand-new elementary school building and address the most urgent facility needs at our middle school and high school.
NEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BUILDING
The district will build a new elementary school building to serve all Antigo students in preschool through 4th grade. The district’s three existing elementary schools are more than 60 years old and have been used beyond their intended lifespans.
Some of the most pressing facility needs at our elementary schools include:
- Water damage and infiltration
- Presence of asbestos, posing a health concern for students and staff
- Safety concerns, including lack of secure entrances and lack of fire sprinkler protection systems
- Need for additional classroom space to provide the highest quality education
- Schools are not accessible for students and community members with disabilities
The new building will provide space for specialized instruction and student services, while also addressing the facility challenges at our existing elementary school.
TIMELINE:
- January-March 2025: The district’s engineering team developed specific systems layouts, site design, and individual room configurations for the new elementary school.
- March-June 2025: The district worked with Blue Design Group to create a detailed construction plan for the new elementary school, containing necessary specifications for the bidding process.
- May 2025: The Board of Education voted to name the new elementary school John H. Bradley Elementary.
- June 2025: The district issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking a general contractor or builder for the elementary school construction project.
- July 2025: The Board of Education approved Miron Construction, a Wisconsin-based firm, as the general contractor for the elementary school construction project.
- August 2025: Construction began on the John H. Bradley Elementary building.
UPGRADES TO MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS
Once construction begins on the elementary building, we will begin work on the middle school and high school projects. Construction for the middle and high schools is expected to start in summer 2026, following the end of the school year.
At the middle and high school, the most pressing issues to be addressed include:
- Safety concerns caused by outdated fire alarm system
- Need for updated electrical systems and interior lighting
- Failing heating and cooling systems
- Worn and outdated interior doors, frames, and hardware
- Deteriorating and damaged flooring
We will continue to provide updates to our community as we make progress on the middle school and high school projects.
